Demolition underway at Chesapeake Square; part of mall to be torn down for new retail and grocery store

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Partial demolition has begun at Chesapeake Square Mall in the Western Branch section of the city.

In 2018, developer Kotarides Companies purchased the mall along Portsmouth Boulevard for $12.9 million. Built in 1989, the mall struggled over the last decade, losing Sears and Macy’s as anchors and going into foreclosure in 2016.

Chris Good, the Director of Commercial Properties at Kotarides, tells 13News Now that the former Burlington Coat Factory anchor store as well as the entire west end of the property — including former anchors Sears, Macy’s and JCPenney — will be torn down. In their place, Good said a new grocery store as well as additional shop space and outparcels are planned for fall 2026…
