Ex-deputy and husband sentenced for animal cruelty

HAMPTON, Va. — A former Hampton Sheriff’s Office deputy and her husband have been sentenced on charges of animal cruelty.

Carolyn and Michael Johnson both faced multiple charges. Investigators said that in July 2023, they found eight pit bulls in the couple’s backyard on Ireland Street with fleas, sores, and dirty living conditions. There was also evidence of dogfighting, investigators said.

At their first trial in September 2024, investigators said they found four adult dogs in kennels with feces, urine and mud on the Johnsons’ property. They testified the animals’ water was dirty and there was no food available to them…
