Man accused of setting up fake GoFundMe for fallen officers

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – The Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) arrested a man on March 20, 2025, after they discovered he set up a fake GoFundMe for fallen officers Cameron Girvin and Christopher Reese, according to the VBPD.

Officers Girvin and Reese were shot and killed by 42-year-old John McCoy III around 11:30 p.m., during a traffic stop on Feb. 21.

VBPD says that Caleb Mourning, 25, did not receive any money from the GoFundMe account, but still received felony charges of:

  • Computer fraud
  • Embezzle or larceny greater than $1,000
  • Obtaining money by false pretense greater than $1,000.

GoFundMe has confirmed to 10 On Your Side that Mourning did not receive any donations and did not raise any money.
