For the U.S. Army, the slogan “Be All You Can Be” has become more than a catch phrase, but a way of life. That life of service is being celebrated this weekend throughout the Hampton Roads area as the Army celebrates its 250th birthday.
On June 14, 1775, the Continental Congress voted to create a fighting force to challenge the British; some of the first companies were formed in Virginia. Two years later, on the anniversary, Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes and proclaimed June 14 Flag Day.
This weekend’s events include a festival on Friday at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Newport News, featuring family activities such as pony rides, laser tag, inflatables and games. The day includes live music, interactive displays of Army vehicles – land, air and water – and festivities culminate in a concert by the Nashville Nights Band and fireworks.
