Norfolk man injured in hit-and-run accident speaks out

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Owen Simmons was riding his bike home when a car struck him and left him with serious injuries on the night of June 8 at the intersection of Granby Street and East Princess Anne Road in Norfolk.

The injuries included bleeding in his brain, fractures to his face and a C4 spinal cord injury, according to his family.

“All I remember is a slamming sound and the fact that I hit the ground. I didn’t even remember that because my head slammed into the pavement then I blacked out,” said Simmons. “I remember waking up in the hospital.”

Simmons additionally suffered seizures and flatlined twice while in the emergency room at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

“I guess the damage was from my head and face slamming it into the car because my bike was literally untouched. It was just me that was tore up,” said Simmons. “I had a massive seizure and couldn’t breathe anymore. They had me on a machine breathing for two days. From what I understand, I flatlined twice and they had to bring me back.”…
