Be mindful of jellyfish when at the beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — It’s summer, and as more people head to the beach, experts say jellyfish sightings are common along our local shores.

Moon jellies and stinging nettles are the most frequently spotted species, especially after storms. While they’re beautiful to watch, jellyfish can deliver a painful sting — sometimes triggering serious reactions.

Experts recommend rinsing stings with vinegar or salt water — not fresh water — to deactivate the stinging cells. Lifeguards say they monitor anyone stung for adverse reactions and keep them out of the water for at least 30 minutes…
