Virginia Beach, VA – Rough surf and minor coastal flooding are posing challenges for residents and visitors along Virginia’s eastern shorelines through tonight. Breaking waves as high as 7 feet are keeping lifeguards on alert in Virginia Beach, while pockets of shallow flooding are already impacting low-lying areas in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, Poquoson, Yorktown, and along the James and York Rivers.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Beach Hazards Statement and Coastal Flood Statement remain in effect until late tonight. Tides are running up to half a foot above normal, with water reaching minor flood thresholds at several tide gauges including West Point, Smithfield, Nassawadox Creek, and Lewisetta. Roads near the waterfront may see water intrusion, especially at high tide this evening and again Friday morning. At beaches from Chincoteague to Virginia Beach, surf conditions are considered dangerous for swimming and surfing.
