U.S. Marshals warn Hampton Roads residents of phone scam using spoofed numbers

NORFOLK, Va. — The U.S. Marshals Service for the Eastern District of Virginia is warning people in Hampton Roads about a phone scam where con artists are spoofing official numbers to trick victims into sending money.

Scammers use “neighbor spoofing” technology to make their number appear as if it belongs to a local business, friend, or law enforcement agency. The Marshals say their offices have been getting calls from people asking why they were told to send money, but those calls are fake.
