Man sentenced for Portsmouth toddler’s death

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A Norfolk man was sentenced to five years in prison on Friday, after pleading guilty earlier this year to the death of a 2-year-old child in Portsmouth.

Back in April, Al Demond McNeil pleaded guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter and reckless handling of a firearm in connection with the 2022 death of Maize Moon, who died just a few days shy of his third birthday at the apartment where he lived with his mother.

McNeil was a visitor to the Deep Creek Boulevard apartment on Aug. 10, 2022, when his gun fell out of his pocket as he stood up from a chair in the kitchen, according to court testimony. The gun discharged and struck the toddler, who was playing on the floor in the kitchen…
