Virginia Beach boy shot in head returns to school to finish fifth grade

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The largest school district in Hampton Roads went back to class Monday morning. Students all over Virginia Beach are starting the new year, and for one local boy, this morning was a milestone in his recovery.

The first day of school can be nerve-wracking for parents and students, but Landyn Davis told us he was excited.

Last February, police said three men fired more than 20 bullets while on Peele Court — one of which went through a home and struck Landyn in the head. A year and a half later, he is ready for his first day of fifth grade.

“Last year, he was very sad and upset that he wasn’t going to be with his friends. And he was here,” said his mother, Emily Rigsby. “So it just feels good to see a smile on his face and know that he gets to go back with all of his friends and his teachers and the staff at the school.”

10 On Your Side was with Landyn and his family Monday morning before he left for school, where Landyn gave us a wave and a soft, shy smile. Rigsby says this moment brings a lot of emotions…
