The name Freemason Abbey has no connection to the Freemasons, a fraternal organization, according to Only In Your State. The restaurant’s name was chosen as a tribute to the former church that once was on West Freemason Street. The church had no connection with the Freemasons either. The Freemason Abbey building was built and dedicated initially as a church in 1873 by the congregation of the Second Presbyterian Church.
