VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — It was a bit windy and choppy on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront but that didn’t stop folks from going out and enjoying themselves this Labor Day weekend. However, with these conditions, it’s important to keep beach safety in mind.
Red flags were displayed during the holiday weekend as lifeguards worked to keep folks safe on the oceanfront. Tom Gill with Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service says rescues have had to be made due to rip currents but that he and his team have been on top of everything, making sure everyone makes it out okay.
“Just today we’ve had 20 rescue calls with about 30 people pulled out,” said Gill. “Lot of it is really short rip currents because what you have is a lot of rips, they’re not going very far because the waves are constantly pounding in and bringing people back in almost as quickly as they get sucked out.”…
