NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY)– A man was found to be not guilty by reason of insanity for the 2021 murder of his stepfather in Norfolk.
24-year-old Jose Jonathan Gutierrez-Chavez was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the second-degree murder of his mother’s longtime boyfriend 30-year-old Drosvin Fernando Perez Escobar, and the malicious wounding of his sister’s boyfriend.
On November 14, 2021, Escobar and the boyfriend of Gutierrez-Chavez’s sister were at the front door of Escobar’s apartment, located in the 1300 block of Strand Street, while Gutierrez-Chavez was standing outside the apartment. Family members say Gutierrez-Chavez had been put out of the residence due to what they described as “erratic behaviors”. During a conversation, Gutierrez-Chavez pulled out a gun and shot both men, hitting Escobar multiple times in his torso and hitting his sister’s boyfriend in the heel of his right foot.
Gutierrez-Chavez’s sister’s boyfriend was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and Escobar was pronounced dead on scene. Gutierrez-Chavez fled the scene but was later located by police, with the gun still in his possession. He was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of those felonies…
