Tidal flooding concerns in Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — While the southern Outer Banks of North Carolina are dealing with the offshore impacts from Hurricanes Humberto and Imelda, there are also tidal concerns in Hampton Roads. However, this weather issue is not related to the tropical systems.

Wind has been picking up at Lynnhaven Inlet in Virginia Beach on Wednesday morning, with gusts strong enough to push water a little higher against the docks. Tide levels will be elevated, with minor tidal flooding likely in most locations at the time of high tide Wednesday afternoon through Thursday, with peak tides on Wednesday evening.

Virginia Beach leaders say they’ve been meeting daily, making sure drainage systems are clear and crews are ready in case of tidal flooding or beach overwash. They tell us the biggest challenge right now is the uncertainty — not knowing if the worst impact will be wind, rain, or water piling up along the coast…
