First of 3 supermoons to make appearance

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Monday night is the first of three supermoons this year, with the others coming Nov. 4 and Dec. 4.

The one happening tonight will reach its peak at 11:47 p.m. and has two names – the harvest moon and hunter moon. It gets the name harvest moon as it’s the closest full moon to the autumn equinox and provides the smallest difference in rise times for farmers to harvest into the night. It’s also called the hunter moon because October is historically when hunters would gather food for the winter.
