NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The Norfolk Police Department is teaming up with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for National Pedestrian Safety Month.
According to the NHTSA, one pedestrian is killed every 72 minutes and one is injured every eight minutes on average as a result of traffic crashes.

In the city of Norfolk alone, officers have responded to 26 crashes involving pedestrians since January of 2025, police said. All of the crashes had reports of injuries for the pedestrians involved, with five resulting in fatalities.

NHTSA stated that around 77% of all pedestrian involved crashes occurred at night. Norfolk Police urge all motorists to use extra caution during periods of reduced visibility. In addition, motorists are asked to reduce speed in areas of increased pedestrian activity.
Norfolk Police also ask for pedestrians to follow the following rules to help with roadway safety:
- Being alert and avoiding distractions such as cell phones or headphones
- Using crosswalks when available
- Wearing bright or reflective clothing and using a flashlight in low-light conditions
- Making eye contact with drivers before stepping into the roadway
