Temporary free use of Norfolk parking garage in anticipation of flooding

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The City of Norfolk, in anticipation of minor flooding, is offering free parking at a city garage.

According to a Norfolk Alert, the York Street Garage (215 W. York St.) is now open free of charge for residents and will remain open until 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13.

Minor tidal flooding is expected Thursday through Sunday. The city said low-lying and flood-prone areas will experience flooding during high-tide cycles.

“The natural tide is a little higher due to the King tide. That happens twice a year, and occurs when the Moon is at a closer distance to the Earth,” explained meteorologist Jeremy Wheeler in his Thursday morning weather blog. “However, it’s the features over the ocean that will be the main cause of the problems. Tomorrow and Saturday there will be some minor tidal flooding during high tide.”…
