VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Across Virginia, schools are celebrating Farm to School Week, a time to highlight connections between classrooms and local farms. But at Arrowhead Elementary in Virginia Beach, those lessons take root year-round.
In a corner of the schoolyard, students tend raised garden beds, collect compost, and care for a small flock of chickens, all part of a hands-on effort to teach science, sustainability, and nutrition.
“We have a partnership with Tidewater Compost,” said Principal Lisa Riley. “Our teacher, Shannon, started the school garden, and Mr. Hawes works with the kids in the cafeteria to sort our trash, so we’re really working to be a zero-waste school.”…
