Bond denied for Portsmouth woman charged in death of 5-year-old girl

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A Portsmouth woman charged in connection to a child’s death will remain behind bars for now.

Portsmouth police search for suspect charged with homicide in child’s death

On Wednesday, Oct. 29, a judge denied bond for 31-year-old Ekara Cowles. She faces several accessory charges related to the death of a 5-year-old child on Stratford Street in May.

According to police, a person called 911 on May 28 for an unresponsive 5-year-old girl in the 300 block of Stratford Street. The caller told police the girl was not breathing and that her lips had turned purple.

After medics arrived to the scene, an ambulance took the child to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, where she was later pronounced dead, police said…
