Man pleads guilty in accidental shooting by 3-year-old in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A man has pleaded guilty to multiple charges after his 3-year-old daughter accidentally shot herself earlier this year.

Kirk Morris Bond Jr., 24, pleaded guilty last month to a felony child abuse and neglect charge and a misdemeanor charge of recklessly allowing access to a loaded, unsecured firearm by children. He is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 6.

According to police, officers were called to Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters at 3:15 a.m. July 18 by hospital staff, and when officers arrived, they learned the child had been brought to the hospital with an non life-threatening gunshot wound to the hand.

On the night of July 17, Bond left his gun sitting out within the reach of his daughter as he stepped away to use the bathroom when the 3-year-old grabbed the gun and shot it, causing a through-and-through injury to the palm of her hand, according to the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. The two of them were the only people home at the time, and Bond took his daughter to CHKD early the next morning, where she got reconstructive surgery for the gunshot wound…
