Man sentenced to more than a decade in jail after Portsmouth deadly shooting

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A Portsmouth man pleaded guilty Monday to a reduced charge of voluntary manslaughter in connection to the shooting death last year of a 46-year-old man and will serve 13 years in jail, according to court records.

Keonte Jamal Whitfield, after he was initially charged with first-degree murder, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of voluntary manslaughter. He also pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted violent felon, discharge of a firearm in a public place and reckless handling of a firearm. In addition to his active jail sentence, he also received five years’ supervised probation upon release.

In September 2024, Whitfield also entered a guilty plea in Norfolk after pointing a gun at drivers and discarding the weapon on school property.
