729-pound great white shark spotted in Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – It’s no secret there are sharks in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Virginia Beach, and recently a 729-pound great white shark has been tracked close by. Bella, a 10-foot juvenile white shark, was spotted 20 miles off Fishermen’s Island Wildlife Refuge and about 32 miles off Virginia Beach.

She was tagged in July at Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, and was last pinged off the Virginia coast heading south to warmer weathers just a week ago.

“Bella will continue south from here. She will spend the winter and the spring down in the southeast and off the coast of Florida, maybe wrapping into the Gulf of Mexico,” said Chris Fischer, founder of OCEARCH, a non-profit organization that works with scientists to study and track ocean life…
