Local farmer struggles with tariffs and input costs, contemplates quitting

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — There is pride in continuing on the multi-generational way of life. The Vaughan Farm in Pungo has been in operation since 1695.

Across the Hampton Roads region, more than 360 farms have been owned and operated by the same families for over a century, according to records from both the Virginia and North Carolina agriculture departments.

But today co-owner Robert Vaughan says he’s not worried about the next 100 years, he’s focused on surviving the next ten. The challenges facing his farm are shared by many others across the agriculture industry: rising costs, dwindling labor, and increasing tariffs on essential supplies…
