PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Alongside a chain link fence on Calvin Drive in Portsmouth, a faded makeshift memorial marks the spot where 36-year-old Brenton Hargraves took his last breath.
With a heart forever broken, Hargraves’ mother, Deshana Linsey, steeled emotions to visit the site for the first time. Hargraves, the first murder victim of the year in the city of Portsmouth, was her first born.

“Yes, I’m standing in regard to my son, Brenton Hargraves, whose life was taken away from him, I’m standing for justice,” Linsey said.
Community activist Bilal Muhammad was Brenton’s uncle. In 2023, Muhammad lost his son Ali to gunfire.
