Freezing temperatures prompt emergency shelter plans in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Volunteers for the Homeless says it is stepping up efforts to support unsheltered adults as temperatures drop below freezing.

Executive Director Darlene Washington says the organization closely monitors weather conditions and adjusts operations when cold weather becomes dangerous.

“Just the most important thing is that we don’t lose sight of the fact that there are people who are sleeping outside, unsheltered, either in cars, under bridges, in parks, and abandoned buildings, and we actually need to be able to provide for individuals,” Washington said…
