PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Three days before Christmas, it was all hands on deck outside Third Baptist Church for the fourth annual Christmas bike giveaway. Portsmouth Mayor Shannon Glover was on the job early, helping volunteers from the church-based group Andrew’s Brothers set up 100 donated bikes.
“I remember when I was a little kid, the most important thing you can get as a child is a bicycle. And it says hope,” said Glover. Parents and children lined up on a field across from the historic church on a chilly but sunny morning.
Starting with a 3-2-1 countdown, Andrew’s Brothers shepherded a 100-bike giveaway for families who need a helping hand for the holidays. “I would like to thank WAVY-TV and 10 On Your Side because we could not do it without you all. You’ve been a blessing and the kids love you for it,” said Carl Williams, spokesperson for the group.
