Man charged after 2nd offense of carrying concealed weapon without a permit

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A man was charged with felony second-offense carrying of a concealed weapon after hiding a gun in his clothes following a shooting in August 2024, according to the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney Office.

Norfolk Police were in the 900 block of Church Street Aug. 1, 2024, when they heard automatic gunfire east of their location. Officers headed towards the Calvert Square neighborhood, east on Bagnall Road, when they noticed 24-year-old Artaveus Larue Whitfield running from the gunshots, according to Norfolk CA.

After Whitfield was detained, officers found a black Glock 48 9mm firearm in his right pant leg. The CA’s office said after conversation with investigators, Whitfield admitted to pulling out his gun before re-holstering it when he noticed the police arriving.

Whitfield does not have a concealed-carry permit and has previously been convicted of the misdemeanor charge of carrying a concealed weapon. He pleaded not guilty, but was ultimately found guilty by a jury Dec. 4…
