Early data shows Virginia traffic deaths fell 15% in 2025; seatbelt law cited as key factor

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Virginia State Police released preliminary findings about 2025 traffic fatalities and found a significant decrease in comparison to 2024.

According to the data, roughly 774 people died while traveling across Virginia roads in 2024. In 2025, that number was closer to 918 people — approximately a 15% difference.

“Now of course, we would love that number to be zero, every single year,” said Matt Demlein, a spokesperson with VSP. “That wasn’t the case. We were in the 700s, and we have already had a fatality in 2026 as well.”…
