Faith community wraps arms around family of region’s first murder victim of 2026

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Surrounded by men of the cloth, family members shared the last moments of 19-year old Jeremiah Cuffee’s life.

“He said, ‘Dad, happy new year, love you. I’ll be back.’ And I said, yeah, I love you, too, so be careful,” said Jeremiah Cuffee’s father, Darrell Cuffee. “And about 12:30, his mother called me and said, ‘Dad, we got to get to the hospital because Jeremiah had been shot in the rear.’ At that point, the family thought the younger Cuffee was being treated for injuries to his back side. That was not the case.
