Candlelit vigil held for murder victims ahead of potential geriatric release law change

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Family and friends of murder victims gathered in Virginia Beach for a candlelight vigil Saturday evening to honor those who were lost while also advocating for change that could prevent further loss of loved ones.

A group prayer, words of remembrance, and a moment of silence were a part of the vigil, all in honor of those taken too soon. For family and friends, having someone take the life of a loved one is painful enough, fighting to keep their loved one’s killer locked up has proven to be another battle entirely.

“In 1994, my brother was viciously murdered by a man with a sawed-off shotgun because he was fighting with his girlfriend and my brother was trying to save her,” said attendee Georgiann Allen, “he was found guilty in 95, and got 168 years. I got a letter in 2006 saying he was going up for parole. And I said, no, this is not happening.”…
