CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – The Chesapeake School Board is beginning the process of hiring a new superintendent to succeed Dr. Jared A. Cotton, who will retire on July 1, 2026.
Dr. Cotton announced his decision to retire in October. He has held the superintendent position for Chesapeake Public Schools since 2018.

The School Board said it is seeking “a dynamic leader with a proven track record in educational and organizational leadership.” To facilitate community input in the search process, the school division launched a survey, with a deadline for community responses set for Jan. 28, 2026.
The survey asks questions about desired traits for the new superintendent and priorities when it comes to staff relations, community relations, and school finance. It should take about five minutes to complete…
