2 dead, 4 injured in multi-alarm Hampton fire

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Two people have died and four people were injured in a fire that engulfed a a multi-unit residence on West County Street in Hampton Wednesday evening.

One of the injured is a firefighter who fell through the roof, but was able to get out with their crew, according to the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue.

Bystanders had reported people were trapped inside the residence in the 90 block of West County Street after a fire just before 6 p.m. Firefighters at a nearby station noted visible smoke in the sky when leaving for the scene.

Crews went inside the residence, which had been converted from a single-family home into apartments, and rescued one person in the home and helped another person get out of the building. Two people had gotten out of the building on their own and were injured…
