End of an era: Norfolk’s French Bakery closes after 114 years

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – The French Bakery, a staple in the Riverview neighborhood of Norfolk, has closed its doors. Owner George Habib announced the permanent closure of the business on Facebook Tuesday. He said his family’s business has been around for 114 years.

The bakery and delicatessen had served the local community since the early 20th century. Habib expressed gratitude for the decades of support from loyal customers and family members who maintained the business through multiple generations.

Habib acknowledged the generations of family members who contributed to the business’s longevity. He cited his grandparents, parents, his brother Eli, his sister Sylvia, who passed away last year, his Uncle Mounir and other family members in his announcement.

“To all my loyal customers, friends and family, I wish to say thank you for all the years,” Habib said in his message. “I am afraid the French Bakery and Delicatessen is now closed and will be gone after 114 years in business.”…
