Norfolk native jumps into action as passenger on Delta flight tries to storm the cockpit

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — When Randall Johnson isn’t handling baggage at Norfolk International Airport in Virginia, he’s handling recruiting and training as the assistant coach of the women’ basketball team at Virginia Union University in Richmond.

But early Wednesday morning, on the way back from a recruiting trip to Houston, things took a dramatic turn just as his Delta flight was ascending.

Johnson stepped into action to prevent a man from accessing the plane’s cockpit and hurting other passengers.

“This man got up, and as of [that point], there was no alarm,” Johnson said. “So he gets to the cockpit door and he starts banging on the door. When he starts banging on the door, the flight attendant that was in the jet seats when he supposed to sit down, he turns around. He walks back about seven, eight seats. He’s walking — he punched the first customer … He punched him. He dropped his phone after that. He’s trying to pick up his phone, so he’s bumping into people trying to find his phone…
