‘She went beyond all the time’: Woman who died in fire left indelible impact on family, community

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Keisha Wilson Cox was a dedicated mother, a social worker who cared for others and very much community-minded.

On the day she died in a fire to her home on Weyanoke Drive, her daughter, Sahdiah Cox, had just returned home from buying her mother a Subway sub for lunch, and had just put it in the refrigerator minutes earlier.

“My mom was dealing with my grandmother, and she was having a bad day, and I had gone to go get her a sandwich from Subway,” Sahdiah Cox said of what happened before the Feb. 18 fire. “I got back, and I put it in the fridge, and then, it wasn’t even, like, 15 minutes later when the fire started.”
