In split vote, Chesapeake City Council approves increase to toll rates

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — In a split 5-4 vote, City Council voted to increase some toll rates on both the Chesapeake Expressway and Dominion Boulevard Veterans Bridge.

Beginning July 1, tolls paid by license plate on the bridge will be set at a rate three-times the amount set for drivers using E-ZPass. Currently, the up charge is $2.

Beginning May 1, toll rates on the “Southern Segment” of the 16-mile expressway that were already set for a $1 increase during peak weekends will increase more for drivers enrolled in the city’s discount program. Drivers in the program will go from paying $1 a trip to 25% of the regular toll cost on weekends, beginning the Saturday before Memorial Day weekend and ending the Sunday after Labor Day weekend…
