No fooling: New parking fees start April 1 for VB convention, sports centers

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Get ready to pay more to park in Virginia Beach beginning April 1 — no fooling.

The city said it will start charging people to park at the Convention Center and Sports Center at the Oceanfront. It will cost $1 for the first hour. The cost will go up incrementally, with a $10 maximum parking charge per day.

It all began with an informal presentation Oct. 21 from Public Works Director L.J. Hansen.

“The reason we manage parking is to allow space to become open,” Hansen said. “When people pay a fee for a period of time, they don’t pay a fee more than they have to. Therefore, they turn over. It allows new cars to come in and park and you have that turnover of the space for efficient use.”…
