Parents alarmed by alleged ‘hit list’ at Norfolk middle school

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — An eighth-grade student at the Academy for Discovery at Lakewood in Norfolk allegedly created a “hit list” naming several classmates as targets, though Norfolk Public Schools officials said that, after checking with Norfolk police, the concern was determined to be not credible.

Parents say the incident occurred on the same day an active shooter situation was unfolding at Old Dominion University. The school division characterized the event as a “situation involving a small number of students,” but parents expressed alarm over the nature of the list and the timing of the school’s response.

Students at the school reportedly first discovered the list and brought it to the attention of administrators. According to families, the list contained the names of at least a dozen students. Some parents said they were not notified that their children had spoken to a counselor about the issue until Friday afternoon…
