ODU ROTC cadets awarded Purple Hearts and meritorious service medals

NORFOLK, Va. — Eight cadets from Old Dominion University’s Army ROTC program were awarded meritorious service medals and two Purple Hearts for their actions during a March 12 on-campus shooting, the U.S. Army Cadet Command said on its Facebook page.

The awards were presented during a private ceremony on Sunday by Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll and Sergeant Major of the Army Michael Weimer. The names of the cadets were not released to protect their privacy.

University and military officials praised the cadets for their quick response, which helped stop the gunman and limited further harm. The shooting injured two people and claimed the life of Army Lt. Col. Brandon Shah, a military instructor who intervened to confront the attacker…
