First of two new AI trash sorting facilities opens in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Thursday, officials from across the region cut the ribbon on the first of two new advanced waste sorting systems that will overhaul the way waste is disposed of on the Southside.

Since late last year, AMP, a Denver-based company, has been making upgrades to its facility off Frederick Boulevard near Norfolk Naval Shipyard. As part of a recently inked 20-year contract with the Southeastern Public Service Authority, or SPSA, AMP is responsible for diverting 50% of residential waste that is currently going to the landfill.

Now, with the help of cameras, robotics and AI, 100,000 tons of trash each year can be sorted through the facility.
