HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — The Virginia Department of Transportation has confirmed the new tunnels at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel will have emergency exits when it reopens in the spring, according to a post from VDOT on Facebook.
As of part of the HRBT Expansion Project, the new twin tubes will have an emergency exit known as an egress corridor. When it’s finished, the protected pathway will be labeled and provide fresh air for safe evacuation to the North or South Island. The corridor will be accessed through sliding doors that separate it from the roadway.
