Norfolk SUV fire near church swiftly contained; investigation ongoing

NORFOLK, Va. — A vehicle fire close to a church brought a large response from Norfolk Fire-Rescue on Sunday night but was quickly extinguished before it could spread to the building.

The call came in at 9:06 p.m., according to Norfolk Fire-Rescue. It happened at 1200 St. Julian Ave., where Union Chapel AME Church is located.

The first arriving units started fighting the fire in the fully engulfed SUV, while other units entered the church to determine if the fire had spread inside. The firefighters opened soffits and walls to check for fire but found none. The fire was marked under control at 9:30 p.m…
