PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Leaders at Norfolk Naval Shipyard say the start of a $442 million dry dock modernization project is laying the foundation for the future of American shipyards.
It’s the historic Dry Dock 3’s most significant upgrade. After opening in 1908, the drydock was used to work on World War I battleships. Today, it was the site of a groundbreaking ceremony, marking the beginning of the project, with the upgrades aimed at improving the efficiency and reliability of maintenance for Virginia-class submarines.
