D.C. buyers are waitlisting unlisted homes on this new platform

D.C. homebuyers are taking a shot at landing their dream home before it’s even on the market — with the help of a new website.

Why it matters: Unlisted allows homeowners to gauge interest in their home even before they’re ready to sell, and buyers can potentially get ahead of their competition by making their interest known.

  • The platform has already become especially popular in D.C., the group tells Axios.

The big picture: While the D.C. real estate market has slowed down recently, it’s still competitive when it comes to snagging a single-family home in a coveted neighborhood — aka you’ve got to be ready to get creative.

How it works: The site features every property listed in the public record. Visitors can search for a house by address and place their name on a waitlist to be considered when the home hits the market.

  • It’s the modern version of leaving a note on the front porch: “I love your house. Here’s my number if you sell.”

By the numbers: Unlisted’s most waitlisted ZIP code in the country is right here in D.C.: Georgetown, the group tells Axios.

  • Over 2,500 homes have been waitlisted in Georgetown’s 20007 ZIP code.
  • Number two most waitlisted: 20016, home to neighborhoods like the Palisades and Spring Valley.
  • Number three: 20015, aka Chevy Chase, D.C.

Overall, 9,279 D.C.-area homes have been waitlisted since Unlisted launched last year…
