Hip-hop legend to serve as professor at this HBCU

Bowie State University has announced that hip-hop pioneer MC Sha-Rock, widely recognized as the “First Lady of Hip-Hop,” is joining the HBCU as an adjunct professor. The legendary rapper, who helped lay the foundation for hip-hop as a member of the groundbreaking Funky 4 + 1, will now educate and inspire the next generation of creatives, giving students the rare opportunity to learn from one of the culture’s original architects.

From rocking stages in the Bronx to stepping into the classroom at Maryland’s oldest HBCU, MC Sha-Rock’s appointment represents another milestone for Bowie State as the university continues to blend academic excellence with cultural innovation. Her arrival also reflects the growing role HBCUs are playing in preserving hip-hop’s legacy while preparing students to shape its future.

Known offstage as Sharon Jackson, MC Sha-Rock joins the Visual Communication & Digital Media Arts (VCDMA) program within Bowie State’s Department of Fine & Performing Arts. She is far more than a guest lecturer drawing on past accomplishments.
