WASHINGTON (7News) — The work week begins with quiet, pleasant weather and slightly lower temperatures, thanks to a frontal passage this past weekend. Temperatures will top out in the middle 80s across the DMV, about five to ten degrees below the average high of 90 for this time of year.
Northerly breezes are ushering in drier air, keeping the humidity at bay as well. Wake up temperatures were in the 50s across Pennsylvania and in the 60s around the DMV. This relief is short-lived; a major surge of tropical air arrives tonight, making it feel very soupy as soon as Tuesday morning.
An isolated storm or two may develop overnight as a stalled front begins to lift back north into central Virginia. Some neighborhoods may get a loud wake-up call from Mother Nature, but the coverage should be isolated.
Later in the day on Tuesday, a strong cold front arrives. This will bring the strong to severe storms to the region, which means a WEATHER ALERT will be in place for the entire area for Tuesday afternoon.
The Storm Prediction Center has the entire region under a slight risk for severe weather, and areas along and northwest of I-95 under an enhanced risk for severe weather, which is a level 3 out of 5. This means the chance for severe storms is greater in this area.
The severe weather threats will range from damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, large hail up to half dollar size, and a weak tornado or two. Not all of these threats are guaranteed, but the risk is there for them to occur. On top of the severe weather risk, is also a slight risk for flash flooding as storms will be moving slowly and dropping heavy amounts of rain.
The cold front will linger through Wednesday just south of the D.C. area. This will take the threat for severe storms with it. However, lingering showers and storms may develop in the afternoon, but they should not be as strong to severe…
