Georgetown University students faced unexpected challenges navigating campus after a severe thunderstorm hit Washington, D.C., on Sept. 3.
The 90-minute storm brought a combination of heavy rain and powerful 64 mph winds, causing around 300 tree topplings and cutting power for thousands of D.C. area residents. The storm also had a particularly high lightning strike rate, averaging 68 strikes per minute during its peak.
