The Click of the Tiles: The Bamboo Room Brings Mahjong Home to Vienna

Climb the stairs above Sushi Yoshi on Church Street and you’ll hear it before you see it: the bright, unmistakable click-clack of tiles being shuffled across a table, followed by a burst of laughter. Welcome to The Bamboo Room, Vienna’s new home for mahjong, and the passion project of local resident Jennifer Groves.

Groves had been teaching mahjong locally for about a year before deciding to open a dedicated venue. Before that, she ran classes and guided play in borrowed spaces around town, including Toastique in Vienna and the Settle Down Easy Tasting Room in Oakton. Demand kept growing, and so did her students’ wish for a place of their own. The Bamboo Room is the answer: a spot where both beginners and experienced players can learn the game, form leagues, and socialize.

A game with a thousand-year story

Mahjong began in China in the 1800s and swept across America in the 1920s, when sets became a household craze. The American version took on a life of its own, with its own rules, joker tiles, and an annual card of winning hands that changes every year, keeping even veteran players on their toes. Players draw and discard tiles, building toward a winning combination of suits like bamboo, characters, and dots, along with winds, dragons, and flowers…
