American University Added to List of Schools Under Investigation for Antisemitism after Swastikas Found Scrawled in Dorm

A complaint alleges students have been ‘threatened, marginalized’, while the school says it takes allegations ‘seriously’ and ‘will cooperate with any inquiries’

American University in Washington, D.C., has been accused of allowing “persistent and threatening” antisemitism on campus after swastikas and Nazi slogans were found in dorm rooms last fall – joining the list of schools under investigation for discrimination.

A federal complaint was filed with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights by the Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law last Wednesday on behalf of Jewish and Israeli students at the university.

It alleges that the students have been “subjected to discrimination, harassment, and intimidation on the basis of their shared ancestry” and “have been threatened, marginalized, shunned, and made to feel unwelcome in their dormitories, classrooms, and social spaces throughout the campus, which has become a hostile environment” since Oct. 7 when Hamas militants attacked Israel.
