Stolen car nightmare: DC woman’s car taken, used in violent crime then burned

WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — Stephanie Massaro walked out of her Northwest D.C. home on Martin Luther King Jr. Day last week and discovered a troubling truth: Her car had vanished.

“I came out and there was a car parked where I knew I had parked my car the night before,” she said. “So I was like, my gosh, where is my car? And I just had this gut feeling. I knew it was gone.”

The black 2014 Ford Escape had been stolen overnight, she said, and two trackers – an insurance one and an Airtag – both were in the vehicle.

Despite this, Massaro said Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officials were slow to find her car until it turned up on Jan. 20, burned to the core in an alley several blocks from her home. Police told her it was also used in a violent crime that may lead to a homicide.

“An officer came to my home, took my statement when I showed him the Airtag location,” she said. “But after that initial instance of the officer being in my house taking my statement, I really never heard from the police unless I was the one reaching out.”
